Addthis Vs. Sharethis
Posted on January 30th, 2008 17 comments
As a blogger, i need to boost my website traffic and increase my readership. I did so many things as of to date just to increase my blog traffic. As you all know, i did reveal the 5 easy step on how to drive traffic to your blog. Other than that i also mentioned about how viral links grow my blog readership .If you noticed, i installed Addthis Social bookmarking since the first day i started blogging. I know addthis.com is one of the best social bookmarking available for the bloggers to promote their blog. However i noticed some of the Social bookmarking on addthis.com are not working very well and some produced error. Thus resulting me, changing my Addthis.com to sharethis.com.
I believe this is a very subjective matters, some people will still love Addthis.com. But in my case i no longer need addthis.com huge socialbookmarking list. I’ved done some testing and analysis of how many of my readers really use all of the list provided by addthis.com, the result, they only used Stumbleupon.com and digg.com. I think it is at best for me to remove and get sharethis.com social bookmarking. The main reason why i am using sharethis.com is:
1) Simple and more user friendly.
2) I love the ability to tell your myspace.com contact
3) Ability to tell all you facebook.com contact directly
4) Listed only the best Social Bookmarking website
My advice, if you havent tried sharthis.com this is the time! Time to change, sharethis.com always the smarter choice

Yep, agree with you bro…ShareThis widget is simple and easy to implement…

I too had seen AddThis, but ShareThis – now that it’s finally available to all, not just WordPress – is way better IMO. I’d like to see some kind of deeper comparison, or hear someone actually tell me the reasons why they think AddThis is better… but for now I agree in thinking ShareThis is the better choice between the two.
Thanks for this post, yours came up top when I googled addthis vs sharethis.
p.s. I’m using ShareThis on my blog – http://willotoons.com – and on my shop: http://shop.willotoons.com/products/geekyfantastic-guys

Thanks for this article – helps clarify the differences between addthis and sharethis. I was hoping to talk to you more about this post but couldn’t find your contact information. I’m developing a similar widget with some additional bells & whistles and thought you could provide some feedback. Send me an email when you get the chance.
Thanks!

Hi!
Funny that you say that Stumbleupon.com and digg.com are performing best for you. When I started with Addthis a few month ago I thought those would be the biggest also for me as everyone seems to have them as default, but… biggest for me are Google, Myspace, Facebook etc. Digg is on sixth place and Stumbleupon is very small on eleventh place. I had 500 bookmarks for September so it is a fairly good statistical base. Maybe different sites having different audiences will have different stats…but for me Sumbleupon and Digg is definitely not the best performing.

I think it in other way. I also know that if my site is bookmarked in at least 20 websites, then also it’s great for me. So the huge list of anyone matters less. But what matters to me is that which one is more usable and more noticeable. If users are not able to notice the bookmark button, then I have no benefit of using anything there. In this case i see that the AddThis widget is more noticeable and useful than that small green button of ShareThis. Secondly the Addthis widget works on mouse-over which is more attractive. The ShareThis widget again needs to be closed by clicking the close button.
That’s why I personally prefer Addthis. -
Hi, my name is Justin Thorp and I’m the community manager at AddThis. I really appreciate your feedback about our service. Your thoughts are helpful. I’m curious though. Can you tell me what kind of errors you were encountering when submitting to different social bookmarks? E-mail me – justin@addthis.com

You mention that you use Sharethis however for this blog post I am seeing Addthis. Why did you switch back?

Hello, I’m the Creative Director at AddThis. Thanks for posting this comparison. I’d like to join this conversation and get some input, and perhaps share a couple things we know about the space. Ultimately, I’d like to collaborate with you to make our product better.
So here are some thoughts in regards to your 4 bullet points:
“1. Simple and more user friendly.”
We have a full time user experience design team that’s dedicated to keeping our product simple, focused, and user friendly. If our product isn’t simple to use or user friendly, we have failed you and your users. However, I don’t think we have… in fact, I believe our product is more simple and user friendly than the other alternatives out there. Our team actively researches our product and we use the data to help drive the design, performance, and innovation. Just recently, we launched a smarter menu—it optimizes itself for each one of your users. Visit http://www.addthis.com/features to learn more. This ensures that the right service is presented to the right user. We’ve seen dramatic lifts in traffic for all our publishers since more people are sharing. This is a win win for everyone. Publishers get more traffic. People can share with one click. And we look at all the data to make the product better for you. This is a core feature that makes AddThis more simple and friendly to use. And this is just the beginning—we want to get more feedback on how we can make our site, product, and overall experience better for you and your users.“2. I love the ability to tell your myspace.com contact” and “3. Ability to tell all you facebook.com contact directly”
Actually, ShareThis no longer supports importing your facebook and myspace contacts. I actually really liked that feature as well in their menu—I agree, it was a good idea. We, too, wanted to add a similar feature to AddThis, but there was a problem—we would have broken our terms of service with Facebook. Just because you can, doesn’t mean we’re allowed to. Facebook is our friend too, so we have to abide by their rules. We came up with a really good alternative solution for now—instead, AddThis always takes you to their destination so you can manage your contacts there. For example, if you share with Facebook or MySpace, we redirect you their site so that you can manage, share and use your contacts. This is a better solution because there’s no middle man.I, however, agree that there could be a easier way to integrate our contacts (other than email address books) into the sharing experience. We’re actually designing and testing some new features. Really-really cool features.
“4. Listed only the best Social Bookmarking website”
AddThis has over 170 services (and it’s growing, thanks to our open directory). No other sharing tool has this many services. These are services that have been recommended and submitted by the public. Submit your own (http://www.addthis.com/services/submit).So what does this all mean? Well, when you combine the largest growing service directory with a smart menu that optimizes itself for each person, your website is going to be distributed more. For example, if someone doesn’t use MySpace, they’re probably not going to use it… so why keep it at the top of the list? Instead, they may use viadeo (french version of linked in), or meanéme (spanish bookmarking), or baidu (chinese bookmarking). AddThis supports all these services and more, and ensures that we maximize your distribution and reach around the world. Learn more about our service directory at http://www.addthis.com/services
Hopefully this helps. Again, let us know how we can help make AddThis better for you. You are one of the greatest sources of feedback we have. Please feel free to make suggestions on our forum (http://www.addthis.com/forum) or email our community manager, Justin. He responded to your post as well.
